CHEVROLET Corvette Hub Bearing
Description: There are basically two types of hub bearings, a Hub Bearing Assembly
and a plain hub bearing. The hub bearing assembly consists of a hub, one piece bearing
and a bearing housing. A plain hub bearing is just that a one piece bearing. Vehicles
with anti lock brakes (ABS Brakes) may have the wheel speed sensor built into the hub
bearing assembly. Hub bearings are found on the front and rear of most front wheel drive
and on the front of some rear wheel drive vehicles.
Purpose: The CHEVROLET Corvette hub bearing supports the wheel assembly allowing it
to rotate.
Maintenance Tips/Suggestions: Hub bearings and assemblies are permanently
lubricated and require no maintenance. They should be checked for excessive play.
Failure symptoms: The most common symptom for CHEVROLET Corvette hub bearing
failure is noise. This is a humming noise that changes pitch with the speed of the vehicle
and may also come and go as you turn left or right. Unevenly worn tires and some road
surfaces can cause similar noises.
WARNING: Ignoring these symptoms will cause
catastrophic bearing failure disabling the vehicle and in some instances brake failure.
AKA: Hub assembly, hub bearing, hub bearing assembly
Location: Hub bearings are located on the front and rear of most front wheel drive and
on the front of some rear wheel drive vehicles. The hub is where the tire and wheel
assembly attaches to.
Disclaimer: Depending on the year and options your CHEVROLET Corvette has, the
above information may not apply. Consult with a professional automotive
technician or manufacturer for specifics on your CHEVROLET Corvette
