ALFA ROMEO 164 Struts
Description: Struts also known a MacPherson Struts. Struts are a type of shock
absorber. Struts are used on the front end of almost all front-wheel-drive vehicles. Struts
unlike shocks are an integral part of the vehicle suspension. A complete strut assembly
integrates numerous suspension parts into one compact assembly, including the coil
spring; spring seats, strut, upper bearing or mount. ALFA ROMEO 164 struts dampen up
and down suspension travel by forcing hydraulic oil through valves in the shocks internal
piston. Premium struts are pressurized with nitrogen gas replacing atmospheric air in the
shock; this prevents bubbles from forming in the hydraulic oil. Gas struts improve
vehicle comfort and control
Purpose: Besides being a shock absorber a strut is also an integral part of the vehicle
suspension, remove the strut and vehicle is inoperative. Struts slow down and reduce the
spring’s natural frequency through process known as damping. ALFA ROMEO 164 struts
dampen movement of the vehicle’s springs as they compress and rebound during vehicle
travel. Struts influence the vehicle ride, handling and control by keeping the tire in
contact with the road.
Maintenance Tips/Suggestions: ALFA ROMEO 164 struts do not require replace at
specific mileage intervals or maintenance. Your vehicle’s struts should be checked
annually. Struts wear out slowly and you may not notice gradual losses in ride comfort,
handling and control. Excessive bouncing, rocking back and forth, drifting or nose-
diving while braking, swaying, or cupping wear on the tires are some signs that your
vehicle may have worn Struts. If you are purchasing new Struts for your ALFA ROMEO 164 consider premium Struts. Upgrading your struts usually improves overall ride
quality, control and handling. Warn struts can increase the wear of tires, ball joints,
steering linkage, springs and C.V. joints. Some original struts may be getting weak after
40,000 or 50,000 miles.
Failure symptoms: Vehicle continues to bounce after hitting bumps in roadway. Front
suspension dives severely during hard braking. Swaying or rolling when at higher
speeds. Signs of oil leaking from the shock rod seal. Clunking and banging noises
coming from the strut may be signs of internal shock failure or strut mounts.
WARNING: Severely warn struts can reduce the distance a vehicle takes to stop and
handling problems that can lead to skidding.
AKA: MacPherson Strut, Strut Assembly, Dampers
Location: ALFA ROMEO 164 struts are located under the vehicle and near the tire and
wheel assembly. They connect from the body to the suspension. Struts are on almost all
front wheel drive vehicle and on the rear of many others.
